Photok is an open source photo gallery application developed by Leon Latsch. The app is provided as is and may be distributed in both free and commercial variants depending on the platform.
Protecting your privacy is a core goal of Photok. This Privacy Policy explains what data is processed when you use the app, how it is used, and how this differs between distribution channels (Google Play and open source builds such as F-Droid or GitHub).
General Data Processing
Photok is designed to work primarily offline. Your photos, videos, passwords, and database content remain stored locally on your device and are not transmitted to the developer.
The app itself does not operate any servers and does not directly collect personal data such as names, email addresses, or precise location data.
Distribution Variants
Photok is distributed in different variants:
- Open source versions (e.g. F-Droid, GitHub): Analytics via TelemetryDeck may be included but are disabled by default. No usage data is transmitted unless the user explicitly enables analytics.
- Google Play version: Analytics via TelemetryDeck may be enabled by default. In addition, Google Play services may automatically collect technical diagnostic and crash information independently of the app itself.
Third-Party Services
Depending on the distribution channel, Photok may interact with third-party services that process technical data required for app distribution, stability, and improvement.
Use of TelemetryDeck to analyze app usage
We use the privacy-friendly analytics service TelemetryDeck (provider: TelemetryDeck GmbH, Von-der-Tann-Str. 54, 86159 Augsburg, Germany) to analyze usage data. The use is based on Art. 6 para. 1 lit. b GDPR, as we require reliable and efficient tools for collecting app usage data in order to fulfill the contract with you, our customer.
What data is transferred?
The data processed by TelemetryDeck is completely anonymized and does not allow any conclusions to be drawn about personal information.
The following data is collected, among other things:
- an anonymized, untraceable user ID (per app installation)
- actions defined by the app publisher (e.g., "app launched," "settings opened")
- a rounded timestamp (to the nearest hour)
- device metadata (e.g., system version, app version, device type)
- additional metadata defined by the app publisher (e.g., "number of items in the database")
What is not stored?
- No IP addresses (not in logs, not in the database)
- No cookies or tracking technologies
- no persistent identifiers that could be traced back to individuals
The source code of the TelemetryDeck SDK is completely open source and available on GitHub: https://github.com/TelemetryDeck
Further information on the exact data processing by TelemetryDeck can be found at: https://telemetrydeck.com/privacy and at https://telemetrydeck.com/docs/guides/privacy-faq/
Crash Reports and Technical Diagnostics
If you install Photok from Google Play, Google may automatically collect technical information about app crashes, performance issues, and device configuration. This processing is performed by Google as the platform provider and is outside the direct control of the Photok application.
Such data may include device model, operating system version, crash logs, and general usage statistics required to ensure app stability and compatibility.
Open source builds obtained outside of Google Play typically do not include this automatic reporting mechanism.
Data Storage
All user content managed by Photok (such as photos, videos, encrypted databases, and passwords) is stored locally on the device. The developer has no access to this data.
Security
Photok implements reasonable technical measures to protect locally stored data, including encryption features where enabled by the user. However, no method of electronic storage can be considered completely secure.
Links to External Websites
The app or project website may contain links to external sites. The developer is not responsible for the content or privacy practices of these third-party websites.
Children’s Privacy
Photok is not directed at children under the age of 13. The developer does not knowingly collect personal data from children.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time. Changes will be published on this page.
